About Us

About the Foundation

Each year, more than 1,500 youth in San Joaquin County enter foster care due to neglect, abuse, or abandonment. The Mary Graham Scholarship Foundation—a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3)—was created by compassionate community members to support these young people when other systems fall short.

Foster youth often face unimaginable hardships in childhood, and their journey into adulthood is rarely easier. On their 18th birthday, most age out of the system with little to no financial support, no family to turn to, and limited access to higher education or job training. They’re expected to navigate the world alone—often unprepared and unsupported.

Your support helps change that.

The Foundation is committed to funding trade school and college scholarships for current and former foster youth—especially those who have “aged out” of care. These young people, through no fault of their own, are survivors of trauma and instability. With your help, they can build new paths forward—toward independence, education, and opportunity.

FOSTERING HOPE, FULFILLING DREAMS

The Mary Graham Scholarship Foundation supports local foster youth by providing access to higher education, life skills, and mentorship opportunities.

Former foster youth often face overwhelming challenges—without the financial support, guidance, or stability needed to succeed in college or trade school. As a result, only 3% graduate from college, leading many into cycles of poverty and limited opportunity.

We’re committed to breaking that cycle. Through scholarships and wraparound support, we help foster youth pursue their goals, achieve independence, and build successful futures.

Our History

2002

Our Roots
A Shelter from the Storm

Established in 2000, the Mary Graham Scholarship Foundation was created to improve the lives of at-risk youth in San Joaquin County. The Foundation was born from a deep need—safe, suitable housing for children removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

In collaboration with community leaders and the Human Services Agency, our volunteer board—made up of professionals in healthcare, business, education, and finance—led the charge to rebuild the crumbling shelter facilities. Together, we helped establish the JD Kortzeborn Child Advocacy Center, a private, trauma-informed space that offers both interviews and medical care for children in protective custody.

2004

Filling the Gaps
From Foster Care to Independence

After supporting the construction of the shelter, the Foundation turned its attention to a critical gap: what happens when foster youth age out of the system? On their 18th birthday, many are left without guidance, family support, or financial stability—placing them at high risk of homelessness, incarceration, and poverty. In fact, former foster youth represent nearly 40% of the nation’s homeless population.

In response, we launched the Trade School and College Scholarship Program in 2004, helping youth pursue higher education and career training. Beyond tuition support, we provide essentials like housing stipends, tutoring, and emergency funds—offering not just opportunity, but stability.

Today

Building Community
Supporting the Whole Child

We know that healing and success take more than just a roof and a classroom. That’s why the Foundation also funds enrichment experiences for children in shelter care—birthday parties, holiday gifts, movie outings, prom attire, and more—helping create joyful, memorable moments in otherwise difficult times.

To support long-term growth, we pair our scholarship recipients with dedicated mentors from the community. These volunteers—attorneys, doctors, educators, and philanthropists—offer guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear as youth navigate their path forward.

Together, we’re not just helping foster youth survive. We’re helping them thrive.
